The theme of the 2020 Global Week for Action on NCDs (7-13 September 2020) was announced during the final day of the third Global NCD Alliance Forum held in Sharjah, UAE.

The annual Global Week for Action on NCDs campaign, first observed in 2018 ahead of the third UN High-Level Meeting on NCDs under the slogan of ENOUGH. and called for Our Health. Our Right. Right Now.

The Global Week for Action on NCDs campaign is now shifting gears.

From 2020 onwards, the Global Week for Action on NCDs will draw from the outrage, energy, inspiration, and determination generated since its first year, and add an extra dose of action-oriented optimism. As the campaign grows, the branding and website are being refreshed to reflect the evolution and future of the campaign.

Despite our collective efforts, the pace of progress to 2025 is still too slow – too many people continue to confront NCDs and die avoidably. Ahead of the Forum this year, the NCD Alliance consulted the global NCD civil society network to identify the biggest gaps to progress on NCDs; The top five gaps identified are detailed in the discussion paper Bridging the Gap; from global promises to local progress and accompanying NCD Civil Society Compass” launched during the Forum – the gaps are accountability, investment, leadership, community engagement and care.

Over the next five years, the refreshed Global Week for Action on NCDs campaign will focus on action to bridge these gaps, with each year dedicated to and highlighting each of the five gaps from now until the fourth UN High-Level Meeting on NCDs in 2025.

During the closing plenary of the Forum, Katie Dain, CEO NCD Alliance, announced the theme of the 2020 Global Week for Action on NCDs saying, “One of our pledges to take things forward from the Forum is to incorporate the lessons, energy the inspiration that we have witnessed from global to national and take forward our efforts on the civil society compass into our annual Global Week for Action for NCDs… we plan to lift these five big gaps into the Global Week for Action each year. We’re pleased to announce that the theme for 2020 will focus on accountability.”

Recognising the power and potential of the NCD movement, Dain continued:

“The golden thread that weaves across all of the gaps is the power of civil society and alliances at national, regional and global levels… and the power of collaboration across sectors. We all have different expertise and roles, and we need to work together.”

“We need to galvanise urgency, outrage, passion we have seen throughout the Forum… We have got the voices, the organisations, the expertise to do that… so let’s up the ante and say ‘let’s get on with it’.’’

A powerful music video by Ghanian rapper, songwriter and Our Views, Our Voices advocate, Chris K resounded through the Forum’s closing, his voice and words capturing the essence of the campaign to date – watch it here. We look forward to more creative ways of voices being raised as the movement gains greater momentum.

The movement is primed and mobilised to push for progress. We’re ready to #ActOnNCDs – Are you in?

Stay tuned for more updates and resources very soon!

Policy is often created in a vacuum, by lawmakers who are far removed from the people affected by the issues on the ground. When it comes to the design and implementation of universal health coverage (UHC), it is essential that patients have a say in the policies and programs that will greatly affect them. As the voice of the global health community, Global Health Council, along with the Medtronic Foundation, Novo Nordisk and members of the NCD Roundtable, held a side event during the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on UHC centered around patients. “Turning the Tables: Patient Perspectives on UHC“ aimed to flip the script by having patients lead the dialogue on their vision for health for all.

Wow! What a week of voices and actions demanding more action!

The second Global Week for Action on NCDs from 2-8 September reached millions of people, thanks to thousands of people in around 100 countries – including you – engaging in the week-long campaign online and in communities.

On Twitter alone #enoughNCDs reached over 2.4 million people in 88 countries with over 3,000 tweets from over 1,100 contributors, matching the momentum of the first Week for Action last year.

Social media was abuzz – individuals posted daily personal actions, information and perspectives to their social networks; organisations shared advocacy priorities through social media graphics and videos; alliances shared links to images of their events and media engagement; people living with NCDs promoted their meaningful participation in events, podcasts and health promotion training; WHO offices disseminated NCD-related health promotion campaigns; and the UN Taskforce on NCDs announced some recipients of their annual awards recognising contributions to NCD-related Sustainable Development Goals.

The ENOUGH. Map of Impact gathered more than 140 powerful Voices of Change from the community and you have alerted us to aware over 50 activities taking place including walks, health screening events, meetings, physical activity sessions, conferences, health education lessons, with some still underway and receiving media attention this week.

During the Week for Action, the NCD Alliance launched a new mini-film on NCDs developed in collaboration with BBC StoryWorks “Waking up and walking the talk on NCDs”, which has already been viewed by over 5,000 people, ensuring the message that the world needs to wake up and take action is reaching far and wide! Watch it here, read more about it here, and share it on with your social networks on Twitter,  LinkedinFacebook.

While the Week is over, we are still keen to hear from you how you took and called for action where you are so we can share a more complete picture in coming weeks of the power of the NCD movement.

MEDIA RELEASE

Activists around the world are raising their voices to say ENOUGH of the apathy, inaction and glacial progress on prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases, and calling on governments to deliver on the right to health for all people everywhere.

2 SEPTEMBER 2019, [Geneva] – With the first United Nations High-Level Meeting (HLM) on Universal Health Coverage (UHC) to be held later this month, thousands of people from Tanzania to San Francisco will raise their voices this week (2-8 September) by participating in activities and engaging with their governments to mark the second Global Week for Action on Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs).

The 2019 Global Week for Action on NCDs, from 2-8 September, an initiative of the NCD Alliance, is themed ‘NCDs and UHC: Delivering healthy lives for all’. It is a unifying and rallying opportunity to celebrate where action has led to progress in improving health, and say ENOUGH to inaction on the world’s largest cause of death and disability. Advocates are calling on governments everywhere to step up and translate commitments into action that will lead to meaningful progress and improvement of the lives of all people, everywhere.

The global health movement is calling on decision makers to bridge the gap between promises and progress. Ensuring that negotiation and commitments to secure UHC by 2030 are not squandered requires urgent and assertive action and investment in countries to turn words from high-level summits into real and measurable health for all.

“We cannot begin to eliminate the NCD epidemic unless we have true Universal Health Coverage,” said Katie Dain, CEO of the NCD Alliance. “It is fundamentally wrong that the health and lives of so many millions of people are challenged by NCDs such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancers simply because they cannot afford to pay for diagnosis, treatment or care. The UN HLM is a massive opportunity – one that could put us on the path to putting a dent in the curve of the NCD epidemic and ensuring that health services deliver for all.”

The Political Declaration on UHC expected to be adopted during the UN General Assembly later this month is far from perfect – with negotiations stalling due to points of contention over sexual and reproductive health and rights, and migration. Similar to the political declaration of the UN High-Level Meeting on NCDs in 2018, it lacks time-bound and financial commitments, and is weak on ensuring communities affected by poor health are at the centre of the health system response. Despite its weaknesses, the NCD Alliance is satisfied that the majority of priorities advocated by NCD civil society are included in the text in some meaningful way.

As part of the ENOUGH. campaign, people around the world are sharing their views and voices on the importance of adequate UHC to improve health for people living with NCDs. Many of their messages highlight the opportunity presented by UHC to address challenges they and their families experience due to NCDs, such as social disparities, financial insecurity, and poorer quality of life.

Bruno Helman, a young advocate for people living with NCDs in Brazil said “UHC is the only way to guarantee that a person living with NCDs has the same opportunities of somebody who doesn’t.”

“We have had ENOUGH of governments not putting people’s health first when making policy decisions. We call on leaders to go beyond the rhetoric, declarations and statements and act urgently to invest in and be accountable for actions that will save and improve lives, and avert the inevitable disastrous long term costs to people and communities of dealing with NCDs.” said Lucy Westerman, Policy and Campaigns Manager at the NCD Alliance.

NOTES FOR EDITORS:

About NCDs

NCDs, sometimes referred to as chronic or long term conditions, are not transmissible from person to person, and include cancers, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, chronic lung disease and mental and neurological conditions. A large proportion of NCDs are preventable, with major modifiable risk factors including tobacco use, harmful use of alcohol, unhealthy diets, physical inactivity and air pollution.

ABOUT THE CAMPAIGN

The campaign, led by global NGO the NCD Alliance, calls for the right to a healthy life free from preventable suffering, disability and death for everyone, everywhere, now.

Need a little help planning and coordinating your activities and communications during the Global Week for Action on NCDs? This set of handy guides and check-lists can help you out – click on the links for tips.

The Global Week for Action on Noncommunicable Diseases takes place annually in the first full week of September, and is coordinated by the NCD Alliance. This impactful event is held within the unifying ENOUGH. campaign. There is a different theme each year.

Guide 1: About the 2019 Global Week for Action on NCDs: Theme, Opportunity, Aims and Coordination
In 2018 the first Global Week for Action on NCDs focused on the broad Our Health. Our Right. Right Now. theme, in front of the third United Nations High- Level Meeting on NCDs. The 2019 theme is Ensuring healthy lives for all: NCDs and Universal Health Coverage, to ensure NCD dimensions and priorities are integrated into universal health coverage.

Guide 2: Communications Guide and Checklist
This guide provides an overview of communications opportunities from including engaging journalists and media, making the most of social media, and a checklist for you to plan and prepare your communications before, during and after the Global Week for Action on NCDs.

Guide 3: Tips for organizing small yet impactful activities
Large public events, like fun runs and flash-mobs can be great, but sometimes you can only manage or need smaller activities. Here are a few key tips on a selection of alternative activities you could organise for your Global Week for Action on NCDs which can meet your objectives, add to the movement’s momentum, and have an impact. The document outlines options for ministerial or other high-level meetings or briefings, focus group discussions, health promotion booths, ways to engage youth, and examples from previous Global Week for Action on NCDs activities.

Guide 4: Public Events Guide – Planning, Reporting, Tips and Checklist
Public events can include gatherings, walks, marches, flash mobs, meet and greets, street parties, sport matches (friendly) and video clips. They provide a highly visible and public opportunity to gather groups of people supporting your cause – both those engaged previously and new supporters – and don’t necessarily cost much to organise. They can also capture the attention of the media and politicians. This guide goes into detail with tips and a checklist to help you plan.
